For their role in the unique re-development of an existing building and unifying the community to support this project, the design team received the 2018 Award of Excellence from the Hillsborough Planning Commission for their contributions to creating a better quality of life in the community, and for serving as a model fro the community to learn from and emulate.
Enhancing the local social scene and strengthening bonds within the community, SHUFFLE is the first of its kind in Florida, allowing patrons to enjoy the most iconic of our states cordially competitive recreational activities in the air-conditioned comfort of a public house as unique as the surrounding neighborhood & its residents.
The adaptive re-use of an existing Disabled American Veterans hall which sat vacant for years was important in revitalizing and re-establishing the local district, as it contrasts a rash of tear-down & rebuild projects homogenizing the distinct old-Florida character of the neighborhood. Not without its challenges, the existing structure required several custom design solutions to meet the expectations of the client.
Additionally, effective zoning changes over time required the project team to seek approval from Tampa City Council for a forty-four percent reduction in required parking & wet zoning approval prior to submittal for building permit plan review. This several months long process was accomplished through friends, neighbors and community leaders working in partnership with the design team to petition Council and present a unified vision in which the success of this establishment was vital to the surrounding emerging neighborhoods continued growth & success as a whole.
SHUFFLE opened to the public in March of 2018 and has quickly become a regular hang-out for patrons of all ages, backgrounds and social status. True to its form and nature as a public house, SHUFFLE exemplifies a community establishment as it has quickly become a hangout for visitors young & old.
